As part of a series of activities lined up to mark REACH’s 1st Year Anniversary, we are excited to launch the Annual Screenathon. Screenathon is an initiative designed to bring together hundreds of volunteers for an extraordinary day of service and provision of health-care and health education services for an under-served community. Volunteers who participate in Screenathon and the donors who sponsor them have the opportunity to make a tangible and lasting impact to the health of the targeted communities in Ghana.
Very much like a fundraising marathon, a period of fundraising for volunteers who sign up will climax with an event involving members of the community and the general public. However, in place of the typical walk or marathon event, REACH members, medical professionals, students and other parties will come together to provide screening, education and other health-care services to a chosen community in Ghana that lacks regular access to health-care.
Our 2010 Screenathon targets Glefe, a coastal community near Dansoman in the Greater Accra Region. The Glefe community suffers from poor sanitary and overcrowded living conditions, which is primarily a result of the impoverishment that afflicts the people and their environment. Glefe’s population is predominantly young, with a median age of 22, hence the largest burden of disease is born by children and infants. REACH’s screenathon will provide health-care and health education services to the Glefe community to impact malaria, diarrhoeal and respiratory illnesses, among others.
Overall, in line with millennium development goals 4 and 7, REACH hopes to achieve significant improvement in lives of children and slum dwellers in Ghana.
A fund-raising website has been set up for this event at http://www.reachghana.kintera.org. Interested participants may register online here (requires online payment) or download this form and email screenathon@reachghana.org for details on how to submit their form and funds collected from donations.
